HLCIT Dissolve, A Regressive Step

Kathmandu Dec 13: Although there was immense pressure given by various segment of society not to dissolve HLCIT, Baburam Bhattarai led government finally dissolve the High Level Commission for Information and Technology (HLCIT) yesterday. Cabinet meeting on Monday decide to dissolve the HLCIT. Science and Technology Minister Ms. Kalpana Dhamala propose to dissolve HLCIT on November 25, 2011 in cabinet after that there was pressure generated by various IT groups and stakeholders to government to stop the dismantling of HLCIT and it seems withheld. In addition to that on 30 November 2011 development committee of Parliament also sent letter to Ministry of Science and Technology and addressing not to dissolve the HLCIT. Cell phone service at top Mount Everest soon

KATHMANDU: Mobile phone services will soon be available on top of Mt Everest, the world’s tallest peak. The service, which will operate on both GSM and CDMA handsets, will be introduced by Nepal Telecom (NT), Nepal’s largest telecom company.“We are planning to commence the service by mid-June this year,” Anoop Ranjan Bhattarai, chief of NT’s satellite division, told . “We hope it will provide an alternative to those currently relying on satellite phone services such as the one provided by Thuraya.”NT is extending its cell phone network to the top of the world with the help of a satellite antenna, which will soon be installed in Gorak Shep, located at an altitude of 5,160 meters. Kathmandu, March 28, 2009: At a time when Nepal boasts of being the first nation in South Asia to introduce third generation (3G) telecom services, a report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has identified the country as one of the least networked in the world.The report, titled Global Information Technology Report 2008-09, has placed Nepal in 127th position in the Networked Readiness Index among 134 nations of the world. Nepal was in 119th position last year. Nepal’s neighbor China leapfrogged to 46th position from 57th last year while India fell to 54th position from last year’s 50th.The only Asian country to make the top 10 list was Singapore.
